A Hand Up hit the ground running at the start of April. We had two large pick-ups plus a very busy Drop Off Day last Saturday that filled the warehouse back up. The fun started on April Fool’s Day when Todd Polley led a team of 6 lady Hawks from UHart’s “Hawks Helping Hartford” community service program and filled the truck with furniture donated from a West Hartford resident. The next day, Alan Heins led a large team of volunteers on three stops in Farmington, Avon and Hartford, which yielded another truckload of furniture. Thanks to the Allens and the three Boy Scouts they brought with them, along with NWC students Christian Thomas and Sean Keating for doing all the heavy lifting. While Alan & Co. were on the road, Mike Fishman, Dave Houpert and new übervolunteers Sheila Ward and Ken Drapeau staffed the warehouse and helped five donors that stopped by to drop off household items. In their down time they continued to fight back against the forces of entropy that engulf the warehouse. The warehouse never looked better, thanks.
With new furniture in hand, there has been a steady parade of client deliveries so far this month. A big thanks to Team O’Neill and three members of St. John Fisher parish in Marlborough for making a delivery to Iris and her five(!) kids last Sunday. The delivery included a small washer and dryer that we had in the warehouse. Glad it had wheels. Thanks also to Sheila and Dan for helping Misael who came to the warehouse Tuesday, to Todd Polley and the great kids from ASD for making a delivery to Sarah yesterday afternoon, and to Sue Keating and Hope Auerbach for meeting Zuliana and her family at the warehouse today.
With a waiting list of 20 clients, we are scheduling more deliveries this weekend. On Saturday, 4/9, starting at 10:00am we need a driver and 3-4 volunteers to make a delivery to a vet in Manchester who’s been waiting just under two months for furniture for his apartment. The following day, Sunday (4/10), starting at 11:00am, we have two clients coming to the warehouse to pick up furniture from their respective lists. We need 3-4 volunteers to help the clients pick out and load what they need from our warehouse. If you have a couple of hours either day, we would love to see you are the warehouse.
