October is here! A Hand Up is here! Won’t you help

Last weekend’s activities started on Thursday, the 22nd, with the help of two sets of volunteers from Fiduciary Investment Advisors (FIA) in Windsor, CT.  This is the second year that FIA has teamed up with AHU to help us with our mission.  The morning crew teamed up with Mike Fishman and made two deliveries to clients in Hartford.  Sue Kayeum drove the truck for the afternoon team and they made a delivery to a client in Windsor Locks and then filled the truck with furniture and other household items from a full home clean out of a donor in Windsor.  A big thanks to Mike, Sue and the good folks at FIA for donating their time and muscle.

The regular Saturday crew (Tom Weigmann, John & Brendan Chan, Sam Deveau, Lukasz Burkacki, and Paul Van Doren) welcomed a new member to their ranks, Brandon Allen-Twiss, who comes to us via Manchester Community College.  The team made a delivery to James in Hartford.  When the team arrived, James only had a mattress, boxspring, TV, sofa and a couple of chairs.  When the team left, James had a dresser and nightstand for his bedroom, a complete living room, a kitchen table and chairs and everything he needed to prepared and eat meals in his apartment.

On Sunday, we opened the warehouse to a client that needed everything for their apartment.  Jim Rattigan, Rich & Brigid Allen, Cameron Chmela, and Bronwyn Rolon and her three daughters helped the client navigate the warehouse and load the furniture and household items that were selected.  The amount of furniture and household goods exceeded the capacity of the UHaul truck the client brought to the warehouse, so the team loaded the AHU truck with the overflow and Rich & Brigid followed the client back to their apartment.  Kudos to Jim & Co. for helping out the Owens family.

This Saturday, 10/1, we have our first Drop Off Day for the month of October.  The warehouse will be open from 10:00am – 1:00pm and we will also send the truck out to collect furniture from four donors in the West Hartford area.  We have a volunteer group coming from UHart’s APO community service fraternity to help us so no volunteers are needed for Saturday.  However, we are in desperate need of NEW pillows, pots & pans and full-size and twin-size sheets.  Please stop by the warehouse located at 93 Talcott Road, West Hartford and we will be happy to accept those items plus whatever else you have to give us.

Sunday, 10/2, starting at 12:00 noon, we have scheduled a delivery to a disabled vet who lives in Glastonbury.   He has nothing but a bed in his apartment and we need a driver and 3-4 volunteers to load and deliver everything else he needs to turn his place into a more livable space.  Please let us know if you can help us out on Sunday.
